Setting Up Vizio TV Without a Remote
Lost your Vizio remote or dealing with a broken one? Don't worry - you can still set up and control your Vizio TV using the physical buttons on the TV, the free SmartCast mobile app, or HDMI-CEC from another device. This guide covers all methods.
Method 1: Using TV Buttons
All Vizio TVs have physical buttons, though their location varies by model:
Finding the Buttons
- Back of TV - Most common location, usually on the lower right or left side
- Bottom edge - Under the Vizio logo on some models
- Side panel - Right side edge on older models
Button Layout Options
Single Button (Newer Models):
- Press once = Menu/Input
- Press and hold = Power on/off
- Short press while on = Cycle through inputs
Multiple Buttons (Older Models):
- Power button
- Volume up/down
- Channel/Input up/down
- Menu button
Initial Setup with Buttons
- Press the power button to turn on the TV
- Wait for the setup wizard to appear
- Use Volume buttons to navigate up/down
- Use Input/Channel button to select options
- Follow on-screen prompts to complete language and basic settings
Limitation: You cannot enter WiFi passwords using only TV buttons. You'll need the SmartCast app or a USB keyboard for network setup.
Method 2: Vizio SmartCast Mobile App
The SmartCast app turns your phone into a full-featured remote. This is the easiest method for complete TV control.
Download the App
- iPhone/iPad: Download "VIZIO SmartCast" from the App Store
- Android: Download "VIZIO SmartCast" from Google Play
Connect to Your TV
- Connect your phone to the same WiFi network you want for your TV
- Open the SmartCast app
- Tap "Get Started" and allow necessary permissions
- The app will search for your Vizio TV
- Select your TV when it appears
- A pairing code will display on your TV screen
- Enter the code in the app
If TV Isn't Connected to WiFi Yet
You'll need to connect both devices to the same network first:
- Use TV buttons to power on and access the Input menu
- Navigate to Settings using buttons if available
- Alternatively, use a USB keyboard (see Method 4)
- Once both are on the same network, the app can find your TV
Using the App as a Remote
Once connected, the SmartCast app provides:
- Full directional pad navigation
- Volume and power control
- Text input for searches and passwords
- Access to all SmartCast apps
- Casting from your phone
Method 3: HDMI-CEC Control
If you have another device connected via HDMI (Roku, Fire Stick, cable box), you may be able to control basic TV functions through it.
How HDMI-CEC Works
HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) allows connected devices to control each other. Your streaming device's remote can potentially:
- Turn the TV on/off
- Adjust volume
- Switch inputs
Enable HDMI-CEC on Vizio
- Access Menu using TV buttons
- Navigate to System > CEC
- Enable "CEC Function"
- Enable "Device Discovery"
Devices That Support CEC
- Roku devices (use Roku remote)
- Amazon Fire TV/Stick (use Fire remote)
- Apple TV (use Apple remote)
- Chromecast with Google TV
- PlayStation/Xbox consoles
- Most cable/satellite boxes
Method 4: USB Keyboard
For initial WiFi setup, a USB keyboard can be incredibly helpful.
Setup Process
- Connect a USB keyboard to your TV's USB port
- Power on the TV
- Use arrow keys to navigate menus
- Use Enter key to select options
- Type your WiFi password when prompted
Keyboard Controls
- Arrow keys - Navigate menus
- Enter - Select/OK
- Escape - Back/Exit
- Tab - Move between options
Method 5: Voice Control (If Previously Set Up)
If your Vizio TV was previously connected to a voice assistant, you can control it hands-free:
Google Assistant
- "Hey Google, turn on Vizio TV"
- "Hey Google, change input to HDMI 1"
- "Hey Google, volume up on TV"
Amazon Alexa
- "Alexa, turn on living room TV"
- "Alexa, mute the TV"
- "Alexa, switch to HDMI 2"
