Setting Up Insignia Fire TV Without a Remote
Lost or broken your Insignia Fire TV remote? You can still complete setup and control your TV using the Amazon Fire TV app, HDMI-CEC, or other methods. This guide covers all options for remote-free operation.
Method 1: Amazon Fire TV App (Best Option)
The Fire TV app turns your smartphone into a full-featured remote with voice control and keyboard input - perfect for initial setup.
Download the App
- iPhone/iPad: Download "Amazon Fire TV" from the App Store
- Android: Download "Amazon Fire TV" from Google Play
Connect to Your Insignia TV
If Your TV Is Already Connected to WiFi:
- Connect your phone to the same WiFi network as your TV
- Open the Fire TV app
- Sign in with your Amazon account
- The app will search for nearby Fire TV devices
- Select your Insignia Fire TV when it appears
- A 4-digit code will display on your TV screen
- Enter this code in the app to pair
If Your TV Is NOT Connected to WiFi:
You'll need to get both devices on the same network first. Try these options:
Option A: Use TV Buttons
- Find the physical buttons on your TV (usually on bottom edge or back)
- Power on the TV
- Use volume/channel buttons to navigate the setup wizard
- Connect to WiFi during initial setup
- Then use the Fire TV app
Option B: Use Ethernet Cable
- Connect an Ethernet cable from your router to the TV
- The TV will automatically connect to your network
- Then connect your phone to the same network's WiFi
- Open the Fire TV app to control the TV
Option C: Create Mobile Hotspot
- Use a second phone or tablet to create a mobile hotspot
- Name it the same as your home WiFi with the same password
- If your TV was previously connected, it may auto-connect
- Then use Fire TV app from your primary phone on the same hotspot
Using the Fire TV App
Once connected, the app provides:
- Directional pad - Navigate menus
- Back and Home buttons - Standard navigation
- Keyboard - Type passwords, search, and more
- Voice control - Press microphone icon and speak
- Playback controls - Play, pause, rewind, fast forward
Method 2: HDMI-CEC Control
If you have another device connected via HDMI (cable box, Blu-ray, streaming device), you may be able to control your Insignia TV through it.
How to Enable HDMI-CEC
- Navigate to Settings on your Fire TV (using the app)
- Go to Display & Sounds
- Select HDMI CEC Device Control
- Enable all CEC options
What HDMI-CEC Can Do
- Power TV on/off with your other device's remote
- Adjust volume
- Basic navigation in some cases
Note: This works best after initial setup is complete.
Method 3: USB Keyboard
A USB keyboard can help with text entry during setup.
Setup Process
- Connect a USB keyboard to your TV's USB port
- Use arrow keys to navigate menus
- Press Enter to select options
- Type your WiFi password when prompted
- Press Escape to go back
Keyboard Navigation
- Arrow keys - Navigate menus
- Enter - Select/OK
- Escape - Back
- Tab - Move between fields
Method 4: Alexa Voice Control
If you have an Echo device and your Insignia Fire TV was previously set up with Alexa:
Voice Commands
- "Alexa, turn on Fire TV"
- "Alexa, go to settings on Fire TV"
- "Alexa, open Netflix on Fire TV"
- "Alexa, play/pause on Fire TV"
- "Alexa, go home on Fire TV"
Note: This only works if Alexa was already linked to your TV before losing the remote.
Method 5: Physical TV Buttons
Insignia Fire TVs have physical buttons, though functionality is limited.
Button Locations
- Bottom edge - Under the Insignia logo (most models)
- Back panel - Lower right or left side
- Side panel - Right side edge (some models)
Button Functions
Most Insignia Fire TVs have limited buttons:
- Power button - Turn TV on/off
- Volume +/- - Adjust volume
- Input/Source - Cycle through inputs (on some models)
Limitation: You cannot fully navigate Fire TV menus with physical buttons alone. Use in combination with the Fire TV app.
Completing Initial Setup Without Remote
Step-by-Step Process
- Power on using the TV's physical button
- Connect Ethernet if available (easier than WiFi without remote)
- Download Fire TV app on your phone
- Connect phone to the same network
- Pair the app with your TV
- Complete setup using the app as your remote
- Enter WiFi password using the app's keyboard
- Sign in to Amazon using the app's keyboard
Buying a Replacement Remote
