How to Setup Insignia Fire TV Without Remote

Setting Up Insignia Fire TV Without a Remote

Lost or broken your Insignia Fire TV remote? You can still complete setup and control your TV using the Amazon Fire TV app, HDMI-CEC, or other methods. This guide covers all options for remote-free operation.

Method 1: Amazon Fire TV App (Best Option)

The Fire TV app turns your smartphone into a full-featured remote with voice control and keyboard input - perfect for initial setup.

Download the App

  • iPhone/iPad: Download "Amazon Fire TV" from the App Store
  • Android: Download "Amazon Fire TV" from Google Play

Connect to Your Insignia TV

If Your TV Is Already Connected to WiFi:

  1. Connect your phone to the same WiFi network as your TV
  2. Open the Fire TV app
  3. Sign in with your Amazon account
  4. The app will search for nearby Fire TV devices
  5. Select your Insignia Fire TV when it appears
  6. A 4-digit code will display on your TV screen
  7. Enter this code in the app to pair

If Your TV Is NOT Connected to WiFi:

You'll need to get both devices on the same network first. Try these options:

Option A: Use TV Buttons

  1. Find the physical buttons on your TV (usually on bottom edge or back)
  2. Power on the TV
  3. Use volume/channel buttons to navigate the setup wizard
  4. Connect to WiFi during initial setup
  5. Then use the Fire TV app

Option B: Use Ethernet Cable

  1. Connect an Ethernet cable from your router to the TV
  2. The TV will automatically connect to your network
  3. Then connect your phone to the same network's WiFi
  4. Open the Fire TV app to control the TV

Option C: Create Mobile Hotspot

  1. Use a second phone or tablet to create a mobile hotspot
  2. Name it the same as your home WiFi with the same password
  3. If your TV was previously connected, it may auto-connect
  4. Then use Fire TV app from your primary phone on the same hotspot

Using the Fire TV App

Once connected, the app provides:

  • Directional pad - Navigate menus
  • Back and Home buttons - Standard navigation
  • Keyboard - Type passwords, search, and more
  • Voice control - Press microphone icon and speak
  • Playback controls - Play, pause, rewind, fast forward

Method 2: HDMI-CEC Control

If you have another device connected via HDMI (cable box, Blu-ray, streaming device), you may be able to control your Insignia TV through it.

How to Enable HDMI-CEC

  1. Navigate to Settings on your Fire TV (using the app)
  2. Go to Display & Sounds
  3. Select HDMI CEC Device Control
  4. Enable all CEC options

What HDMI-CEC Can Do

  • Power TV on/off with your other device's remote
  • Adjust volume
  • Basic navigation in some cases

Note: This works best after initial setup is complete.

Method 3: USB Keyboard

A USB keyboard can help with text entry during setup.

Setup Process

  1. Connect a USB keyboard to your TV's USB port
  2. Use arrow keys to navigate menus
  3. Press Enter to select options
  4. Type your WiFi password when prompted
  5. Press Escape to go back

Keyboard Navigation

  • Arrow keys - Navigate menus
  • Enter - Select/OK
  • Escape - Back
  • Tab - Move between fields

Method 4: Alexa Voice Control

If you have an Echo device and your Insignia Fire TV was previously set up with Alexa:

Voice Commands

  • "Alexa, turn on Fire TV"
  • "Alexa, go to settings on Fire TV"
  • "Alexa, open Netflix on Fire TV"
  • "Alexa, play/pause on Fire TV"
  • "Alexa, go home on Fire TV"

Note: This only works if Alexa was already linked to your TV before losing the remote.

Method 5: Physical TV Buttons

Insignia Fire TVs have physical buttons, though functionality is limited.

Button Locations

  • Bottom edge - Under the Insignia logo (most models)
  • Back panel - Lower right or left side
  • Side panel - Right side edge (some models)

Button Functions

Most Insignia Fire TVs have limited buttons:

  • Power button - Turn TV on/off
  • Volume +/- - Adjust volume
  • Input/Source - Cycle through inputs (on some models)

Limitation: You cannot fully navigate Fire TV menus with physical buttons alone. Use in combination with the Fire TV app.

Completing Initial Setup Without Remote

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Power on using the TV's physical button
  2. Connect Ethernet if available (easier than WiFi without remote)
  3. Download Fire TV app on your phone
  4. Connect phone to the same network
  5. Pair the app with your TV
  6. Complete setup using the app as your remote
  7. Enter WiFi password using the app's keyboard
  8. Sign in to Amazon using the app's keyboard

Buying a Replacement Remote

Official Insignia/Fire TV Remote

  • Purchase from Best Buy (Insignia brand)
  • Amazon Fire TV remotes work with Insignia Fire TV Edition
  • Voice remote recommended for full functionality

Compatible Remotes

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick remote - Works with Insignia Fire TV
  • Third-party Fire TV remotes - Available on Amazon
  • Universal remotes - Basic functions only (see our Insignia TV Setup Codes guide)

Troubleshooting

Fire TV App Can't Find TV

  • Ensure both devices are on the same WiFi network
  • Restart both the TV (unplug for 30 seconds) and app
  • Check if the TV is in setup mode or showing content
  • Disable VPN on your phone if enabled

Pairing Code Not Appearing

  • Try refreshing the device search in the app
  • Restart the TV by unplugging for 30 seconds
  • Ensure the TV is powered on and past the boot screen

Can't Enter WiFi Password

  • Use the keyboard feature in the Fire TV app
  • Connect a USB keyboard temporarily
  • Use Ethernet instead of WiFi initially
